An Ant Habitat — Creatures that Work Together

My son has the coolest new toy.  I think I might even like it better than he does.  It’s an ant habitat. Did you know that ants can lift up to 20x their body weight! They have two stomachs and three eyes! They also have uncanny communication skills and amazing abilities to work together to achieve a common goal.

The toy is a rectangle ant habitat.  Inside there is a gel, allegedly derived from a NASA Space experiment, that serves as both habitat and nutrition for the ants – allowing you to watch them as they create these tunnels.  There is also an LED in the base some of then even come with a light show that changes from one color to the next (or you can pause it on your favorite color).

You must order your ants in the mail.  I must admit when I opened the mail and I had forgotten about ordering the ants I was a bit freaked when I saw a test tube filled with moving objects.  For a second I wondered whether I was the object of some perverse chemical warfare.

In one day these creatures are already working in a group to make tunnels and it is fun to get my son up in the morning to see the progress they made overnight.  I can’t wait to pick him up from school to show him their work today!
